The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman

All Hallow's Read!
Give a book for Halloween!

The Graveyard Book. Neil Gaiman. 4 stars. Best Thing: Ghost Stories. Worst Thing: Living People Stories.

Spookiness: 4/5 Ghosts.

Spooky elements: graveyards, ghosts, ghouls, some kind of vampire or something, werewolves, mysterious murderers.

Good for: just about everybody. It's technically juvenile fiction, but has something for everyone. It contains words that might be pretty hard for a lot of kids on their own, so if you're considering it for a child it might be better to read it together.

The Prince of Mist, by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

All Hallow's Read!
Give a book for Halloween!

The Prince of Mist. 3.5 stars. Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Best Thing: Dreamlike atmosphere and pacing. Worst Thing: No lasting effect. Nothing really stood out enough to make this a great book.

Spookiness: 5/5 Ghosts.

Spooky elements: clowns, living statues, eternal evil, monsters, clowns, mysterious children, haunted pasts, freaky poltergeist activity, the list goes on, and did I mention clowns?

Good for: young adults, regular adults looking for something shorter than a Stephen King novel.

All Hallow’s Read

So, it looks like this "All Hallow's Read" thing Neil Gaiman started is going to become a real thing people do (which is not unexpected—the man has almost 1,500,000 twitter followers, he can start whatever traditions he wants!).

Since it's a pretty nice idea, I think in honor of Halloween/All Hallow's Read, I'll do some spooky book reviews the rest of this week! I've got a couple of appropriate books picked out.

Have any spooky book suggestions? Respond in the comments!

The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak

Markus Zusak. The Book Thief. 4.5 stars. Best Thing: Unconventional. Worst Thing: The beginning.

I really, really wanted to give this book 5 stars! I had to keep reminding myself how hard it was for me to get into it—I actually started it once, at least a year before finally reading it, and couldn't get past the first chapter. If you have this problem, keep going! It's worth it.

This is one of those books that makes me wish I could go back and retroactively rate a lot of other books lower, just to demonstrate how good it is by comparison (looking at you, Hunger Games series!). It's not that the other books are bad; this one is just that good. I will definitely seek out other books by this author.

Incarceron, by Catherine Fisher

Inarceron. There's more than one kind of prison. 3 stars. Catherine Fisher. Best Thing: Interesting Concept. Worst Thing: Incomplete. In a lot of ways it feels like half a book

Second worst thing: The solution to one of the big main mysteries wasn't very mysterious at all. It's kind of a letdown when plot points are that obvious.

Odd and the Frost Giants, by Neil Gaiman

Odd and the Frost Giants, 4.5 stars. Neil Gaiman. Best Thing: Vikings. Worst Thing: Some Googling Required. While the book is almost perfectly self explanatory, near the end the author forgets his audience, and mentions stuff requiring outside expertise*

*It was really hard to come up with a Worst Thing for this one.

Once Upon a Time in the North, by Philip Pullman

Philip Pullman. Once Upon a Time in the North. 4 stars. Best thing: a cool little western-style story (that comes with a board game!). Worst Thing: Might be hard to get into without reading the original series.*

*Since I've read the original series I may not be the best judge of this.

Blog Update

Sorry for the delay on book reviews! I'm going to put up two short reviews of short books in the next couple of days, and then I'll be working on having a nice buffer of reviews set up so updates happen more regularly. Here's a list of the book reviews coming up:

  • Once Upon a Time in the North, Philip Pullman
  • Odd and the Frost Giants, Neil Gaiman
  • Incarceron, Catherine Fisher
  • The Book Thief, Markus Zusak

What should I review after that? Any suggestions?

Beloved, by Toni Morrison

Banned Books Week!
Support the Freedom to Read

Beloved. A harrowing, devastating ghost story about slavery and survival. Toni Morrison. 4 stars. Best Thing: Atmosphere—suspenseful and spooky. Worst Thing: Spoilers! It’s hard enough to avoid spoilers about this book without having them right in the introduction! It depends on the edition, but read the introduction last to be safe.
