Good for: People who actually enjoyed The Magicians.
Coming into this book with a better idea of what to expect, I didn't hate it as much as I hated the first book. But I still hated it a bit! Seriously, is it just impossible for Grossman to write a likeable character without killing them off?

So it sounds like this one isn't worth bothering with? That was kind of my assumption after reading the Magicians. Also, I finally read Coraline (which was amazing, of course) so now you can talk to me again.

Hmm. That depends. This book was a much better book than the first one—much more tightly plotted, with way less boring bits than The Magicians. And there were even some funny bits! But the characters were only slightly less terrible. If you look at it as kind of a "year in the life of arrogant magic people" instead of trying and failing to identify with characters who are just incredibly selfish and awful, it might be okay.

I don't mind despicable characters, so I'm still probably going to check these books out. Although now I'll know that any time someone I like is on the page that they will probably die. haha
